No. 02 — Helmingham Hall Garden Sketchbook
Some gardens leave an impression long after a visit.
When I visited Helmingham Hall Gardens in Suffolk in the summer of 2024, I was still relatively new to exploring and photographing gardens. I knew little of its history, yet I remember the wonderful sensation of stepping back in time.
There was something captivating about the beauty of the surroundings, the quality of the light and the sense of calm and tranquillity. The historic setting, the formal structure of the gardens and the softness of the planting seemed to exist in quiet harmony.
I found myself drawn to moments of light, colour and atmosphere, simply enjoying the pleasure of being there and responding to whatever caught my attention.
Although rain brought my visit to an unexpectedly early conclusion, the experience stayed with me.
These analogue photographs are a reflection of that visit, preserving something of the beauty, tranquillity and timeless atmosphere I encountered.
Photographed on Kodak Portra film with my Leica M2 rangefinder.
