Elder & Wild's Cutting Garden

RHS Chelsea Flower Show silver medalist 2024

Becky, founder, primary grower, and florist at Elder & Wild, creates beautiful sustainable floral arrangements from her inspiring urban cutting garden in Nottinghamshire.
We first connected online a few months ago when Becky asked me if I photograph cutting gardens as she wanted to showcase the cutting garden side of her business.
Marred by the unusually wet weather, gardens are going-over particularly early this season, so we agreed to link up the very next day for a brief chat and hopefully to create a few initial photographs before the flowers faded altogether.
Becky's cutting garden is delightful and as I approached it from the lower side of the garden nearest to the house, the beds scaled above my head, providing a sense of being completely enveloped by blooms. Becky mentioned that the best time to photograph her garden was in the summertime when the beds will be positively brimming.
What a delight to discover more about Elder & Wild's story, immerse in the gloriously dense cutting garden, breath in specifically the sweet scent of 'Lady Emma Hamilton', a glorious orange rose, now retired by David Austin, to meet Becky, and to create a few pilot images.
Becky has been growing flowers in her urban garden for 7 years. The dense tall planting of roses, cosmos, scabious, to name but a few, makes it hard to believe that the footprint is modest in size, and I love how Becky embraces the occasional imperfections, and nature.

Kind Words
Hi Gina, I’ve just got back from a wedding and sat with a tea looking through the images. They’re so lovely, I love all the flower portraits and I’m so pleased we got one with my cat Margot!
