Helmingham Hall Gardens, Thetford
A place of beauty and tranquility that leaves a lasting impression
Summer 2024
In June, I tagged onto a mini road trip to Norfolk and Suffolk a long-anticipated visit to Helmingham Hall Gardens. The journey had come together around a series of garden invitations: a visit to a garden in Beccles owned by Julianne Fernandez of Chasing Arcadia Garden Design, an award-winning garden designer, and a private opportunity to photograph the Kitchen Garden at Holme Hale Hall, designed by Arne Maynard.

Helmingham Hall Gardens are Grade I listed, and the setting is extraordinarily photogenic. The gardens possess a quiet sense of balance and atmosphere that aligns beautifully with my own aesthetic, offering moments of structure, softness, and stillness in equal measure.

My visit, however, proved all too brief. Rain arrived shortly after I did, and with accommodation check-in looming later that afternoon, time was limited. Even so, the gardens left a distinct impression, the sort of place where beauty and tranquillity linger long after the visit itself.
