After 2023's successful nature gatherings in gloriously intriguing nature orientated locations in the East Midlands, and recently hearing of your continued interest, I have compiled what I hope will be some cracking gatherings for us to enjoy together! THE OUTWOODS, WOODHOUSE EAVES

Syston Road, Cossington, LE7 4UZ​

 

40 hectares of ancient wood and visitor attraction overlooking Loughborough and the Soar Valley. It has rare rock outcrops, many species of woodland plants and substantial wildlife, and it is part of Beacon Hill.

SWITHLAND WOOD & THE BRAND

80 Roecliffe Road, Swithland, LE12 8TN

This is apparently a gem of a place to visit.

​

Historical Site: Cambrian period/around 541 million years ago. The wood is Leicestershire’s most important ancient woodland for nature conservation. Quarries within the wood were a source of the distinctive Swithland Slate.

HERBERT'S CROFT NATURE RESERVE

Whitcroft's Lane, Markfield LE67 9PB​

​

A real gem in the heart of Charnwood Forest, this reserve offers a wide variety of habitats to explore. Whether you’re a birdwatcher, a botanist or just looking for a nature reserve to really explore, Ulverscroft is the perfect place to get away from it all for a few hours.

COSSINGTON MEADOWS

This wetland haven is worth visiting all year around, but comes alive in the winter, when rafts of ducks, like wigeon and teal, gather on the lakes, and short-eared owls hunt over the meadows.

PRIOR'S COPPICE NATURE RESERVE

Braunston, Oakham LE15 8DB​

​

A woodland reserve teeming with wildlife and ancient atmosphere, Prior’s Coppice is a relic of the wildwood that once covered all of Leicestershire and Rutland. When you step beneath the trees, you can feel how old this remnant of woodland is.

​

BROOKE HILL WOODS

Brooke Road, Oakham, LE15 6HQ

Access via the main car park on your right after passing Brooke Hill Academy, immediately after 20 MPH signs.

​

Young flourishing woodland overlooking Rutland Water is full of life; invertebrates that flock here in summer, barn owls and red kites, plus a variety of plant species.

Seasonal highlights include Grey wagtail and Reed warbler in Summer, and Redwing, Fieldfare and Gadwall in Winter.
